You moved, or traveled, or joined a serious barbell gym, and suddenly every plate is a kilo and every number in your head is a pound. Your working sets, your warm-ups, your PRs: all in a language the bar doesn’t speak. This is the practical survival guide for exactly that situation.
First, the mindset shift
Stop converting every set in your head. It’s exhausting and error-prone, and it keeps your attention on arithmetic instead of lifting. Instead, learn a handful of anchor conversions and let a calculator handle the rest.
The cheat sheet: pound milestones → nearest kg load
These are the pound numbers you actually care about, and the closest a standard kilo set gets you. Note that most don’t land exactly. That’s the nature of cross-unit loading, and it’s normal.

The two rules that make it painless
Rule 1: Round to the plates, not to the number
In a kilo gym, the smallest common change plate is often 1.25 kg (≈ 2.76 lb per plate, so 2.5 kg / ≈5.5 lb added to the bar as a pair). That means your realistic increments are about 5–6 lb at a time. Don’t fight it. Pick the nearest workable load and go.
Rule 2: When in doubt, round down on work sets, up on warm-ups
- Work sets: if you can’t hit your exact number, take the closest under. A pound or two light on a heavy triple won’t cost you anything, and it keeps the set clean.
- Warm-ups: round up. The slightly heavier warm-up just makes the work set feel lighter. No downside.

Warm-up strategy in a kg gym
Warm-ups are where the kg/lb mismatch causes the most fumbling, because you’re changing weight every set. A clean approach:
- Start with the empty 20 kg bar (44 lb). It’s already a touch heavier than the 45 lb bar you’re used to, so respect it.
- Jump in round kilo increments (add a pair of 10s, then 15s, then 20s) rather than trying to mirror your usual pound jumps. Kilo plates want to move in kilo steps.
- Only get precise on your top warm-up and work sets, where the exact weight matters.
The PR problem (and how to make peace with it)
Here’s the emotional one: your PRs don’t exist on a kilo bar. You can’t load exactly 315. The closest is 142.5 kg, which is about 314.2 lb, just 0.8 lb shy, or 145 kg, which is 319.7 lb.
You have two honest choices: chase the kg number just above your old PR (a legitimately harder lift, and a clean new milestone), or accept the closest under and know you’re essentially there. Either way, start building your intuition in kilos now. Six months in, 142.5 kg will feel like a number, the same way 315 used to. New units, new milestones.
