I spent my whole lifting life thinking in pounds. 135 on the bar. 225. 315. Those numbers meant something. You knew exactly what a plate was, what a “plate and a quarter” per side added up to, what your next milestone looked like.

Then I started training at a gym that stocked only kilogram plates. And nothing added up anymore.

I’d want 225. The bar was 20 kg. The plates were 25s and 20s and 15s. I’d stand there doing arithmetic in my head, converting back and forth, never quite landing on the number I actually wanted. My old milestones didn’t exist on this bar. That frustration is the entire reason the calculator exists, and it’s worth explaining why it happens, because once you understand it, the whole thing stops being annoying and starts being simple.

Two worlds, two sets of plates

Barbell plates come in two standards, and they were never designed to line up:

Here’s the first gotcha: a 20 kg bar is not a 45 lb bar. 20 kg is 44.09 lb. A 45 lb bar is 20.41 kg. Close enough that people assume they’re the same. That assumption is where the confusion starts, because it isn’t. Every calculation you make inherits that small mismatch.

The numbers don’t convert cleanly by design

25 kg is 55.12 lb. Not 55. Not 50. 55.12. 20 kg is 44.09 lb. Load a “clean” kilo weight and you get an ugly pound number, and vice versa. There is no round-number bridge between the two systems, because they were built from different base units. Asking a kg plate to produce a round pound total is like asking a metric wrench to fit an imperial bolt: it’ll get close, but “close” is exactly the problem when you care about hitting a specific weight.

So when you want 225 lb in a kilo gym, you’re really asking: what combination of 25/20/15/10 kg plates, on a 20 kg bar, gets me closest to 225 lb? The honest answer is usually “you can’t hit it exactly, but here’s the nearest under and the nearest over.” (For 225 lb, that’s 220.5 lb or 226 lb, never 225 on the nose.)

Why this trips up strong, experienced lifters

This isn’t a beginner problem. It hits experienced lifters hardest, because your milestones are baked into one unit. You know what 315 feels like. You have no intuition for 142.5 kg, even though it’s the same weight. Your whole mental map of “how heavy is heavy” was drawn in a language the new gym doesn’t speak.

The fix isn’t to memorize a conversion table. It’s to stop trying to force round numbers and instead ask a better question: given the plates in front of me, what’s the closest I can actually load? That’s a solvable problem. It’s the only problem that matters, and it’s exactly what the calculator answers.

How to think about it going forward

  1. Pick the weight you want, in whatever unit you think in. Don’t convert in your head.
  2. Accept that cross-unit means “closest,” not “exact.” Loading across systems, you’ll almost always land a pound or a kilo off. That’s fine. Pick the side that’s closer, or round to a working set.
